A cluster of three structures built in the early 1900’s as a commercial store and two residences, the existing structures were restored and developed into the Boston Mill Visitor Center at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a state-of-the-art facility.

Regency Construction Services, Inc. served as the Construction Manager at Risk for the renovation of three existing structures to create the Boston Mill Visitor Center for Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP). The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the National Park Service partnered on the project to educate and engage new and returning visitors as they seek new adventures.

Originally built in 1905 as a commercial store, the 4,340 SF main building was restored and adapted into a centralized visitor center. A new model for the national parks, the project includes state-of-the art media and communications technology to convey information to visitors, including digital screens and information stations, mobile apps, and outdoor electronic kiosks. The Visitor Center also offers conventional exhibits and a gift shop. The project is LEED certified.

The main building consisted of a historic rehabilitation, including removing the structure from the foundations, installing new foundations and then replacing the structure on the new foundation; repairing and replacing the existing floor structure and wood siding; new historically accurate roofing, windows, awnings, and finishes as well as new electrical, heating and cooling and plumbing systems. The main building is one of the last remaining railroad-associated historic structures in the park.

The project included renovations to the two former homes onsite as well. These facilities were transformed into offices for the National Park Service, with new HVAC, a new roof, and ADA accessible restrooms for one of the two buildings. Regency upgraded the roof of the other building as well, and improved the exterior siding, interior finishes, electrical, and plumbing for both buildings.

Regency also constructed a pavilion that was designed to mirror the original barn on the site. The pavilion offers scenic views of the Cuyahoga River below as well as the park. The courtyard between the buildings includes stone walking paths, reclaimed fieldstone benches, and bioswales.

The Boston Mill Visitor Center was selected for the Outstanding Restoration of Historic Structures Award from the Cleveland Restoration Society and AIA Cleveland.
