Regency Construction Services, Inc. renovated The Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital Pre and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) replacing mechanical, electrical, and medical gas systems while maintaining all critical operations in an occupied hospital facility.

Regency served as General Contractor for The Cleveland Clinic Foundation’s three-phase renovation to the pre and post-anesthesia care unit at The Cleveland Clinic Lutheran Hospital. Commonly referred to as the “PACU,” this space is a critical care unit where patients’ vital signs are closely monitored as they are prepped for surgery and as they recover from anesthesia after a surgery or procedure. This is also where pain management procedures begin.

Completed in three phases, the project increased the PACU’s patient capacity by upgrading pre- and a post-operation spaces with nine new custom angled headwall units, new water and electric lines, and new nurses’ stations. Most of the units were positioned to serve two patients at once.

Regency also upgraded the back of house area which encompassed offices, a soil room, a staff break room, restrooms, a vending area with freestanding ice maker, and storage. We also replaced the mechanical systems, medical gas lines, and finishes to accommodate blanket warmers, linen carts, mobile computers, and medication stations.

Regency self-performed rough and finish carpentry scopes of work including selective demolition, doors, frames, hardware, casework, millwork, metal studs, drywall, and ceilings.

The sensitive nature of the space and its proximity to other sensitive patient areas meant that the work had to be completed in an occupied area while maintaining hospital operations, closely following ICRA protocols.

With an eye to budget and schedule, Regency suggested a revised phasing arrangement that would reduce the number of medical gas shutdowns that would need to take place to complete the work. By simply changing the order in which the rooms were constructed, our team was able to add shutdown valves throughout the PACU to mitigate the costs and risks associated with shutdown procedures to facilitate the work for The Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
